YPM Sunrise Rotary House Program needs 2 Full-Time Youth Support Counsellors
              
The YWCA Lethbridge and District currently has two Full-Time positions (40 hours per week) for Youth Support Counsellors within the YPM Sunrise Rotary House Programs.  Both positions are to commence February 1, 2012.
 
YPM Sunrise Houses are a safe residential place for youth ages 18-24. All youth are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Youth accessing this program do not receive services from Southwest Alberta Child and Family Services. The basic goal of this program is to provide support to youth and assist them with their transition to indpendent living.  
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
·         Completed Diploma or Degree in a Human Services field (experience an asset)
·         Standard First Aid and CPR
·         Possess 16 hour Suicide Intervention Certification
·         Criminal Record and Child and Youth Involvement Module (CYIM) checks – must have been completed within the last 6 months.
·         16 hour Aboriginal Awareness Training
·         Non Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI or SIVA)

PREFERRED SKILLS:
  • Experienced in child and youth care, behavioural management of emotionally and behaviourally challenged youth, including those with mental health issues.
  • Knowledgeable of theories and phases of independence
  • Be skilled in the areas of group facilitation and workshop preparation
  • Possess superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Be skilled at developing, delivering and evaluating life skills and career planning with youth in their transition to independence.
  • Able to engage community resources to the benefit of the youth
  • Focused on developing the youth’s strengths and assets
  • Demonstrate that they believe in youth and their ability to succeed.
  • Respectful in their approach to working with youth
  • All staff must follow the Canadian Social Work Code of Ethics
  • As this job includes client transport, the successful candidate will possess a valid Driver’s License, a clean Driver’s Abstract and a reliable vehicle.

YWCA's LIFE  Program needs 1 Full-Time Youth Support Counsellor
         
The YWCA Lethbridge and District currently has a Full-Time Position as a Youth Support Counsellor available within Learning Independence for Experience Program (LIFE). This position will be for 40 hours per week and will include weekends, days and evenings. Position is to commence February 1, 2012
 
The Youth Support Counsellor of the YWCA LIFE Program is directly responsible for the 24 hour day to day basic care of youth who are clients of the program. In addition to basic care the Youth Support Counsellor is responsible for life skills development, service planning, life space counselling and all other clients’ services as required.
 
 QUALIFICATIONS:
 
All staff of the LIFE Program, regardless of their position, must hold the following qualification:
 
  • Possess a completed diploma or degree in the Human Services field (child and youth care, criminal justice, social work etc.)
  • All staff must follow the Canadian Social Work Code of Ethics
  • Have taken a minimum 8 hours of Aboriginal Cultural Awareness training
  • Be culturally sensitive and actively supportive of helping youth maintain their culture and spiritual beliefs
  • Be experienced in child and youth care, behavioural management of emotionally and behaviourally challenged youth, including those with mental health issues.
  • Be experienced in working with natural families and supports.
  • Be able to engage community resources to the benefit of the youth
  • Be skilled at group work, individual life space counselling
  • Be skilled at developing, delivering and evaluating life skills and career planning with youth in their transition to independence.
  • Be knowledgeable of theories and phases of transitioning to independence
  • Meet all screening procedures including provision of a clean criminal history and child youth involvement module record checks (resubmitting every 3 years)
  • Possess Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Possess CPI Certification
  • Possess 16 hours Suicide Intervention Certification (renewed every 3 years)

  • Teach and role model effective problem solving and decision making
  • Act decisively, think on their feet, and manage crisis
  • Demonstrate that they believe in youth and their ability to succeed
  • Have patience to teach youth life management skills and pro social values in a safe environment
  • Know how to build community networks and how to use community networks
