YWCA Lethbridge :: LIFE Program

LIFE Program

This program has been operational since December 1, 2005. The Learning Independence for Experience Program provides services to six male or female youth aged 15 to 22 years, who possess Child Intervention Status. These youth are residents of Southern Alberta who may be more significantly challenged and require more structure, vocation and skill development in order to move to the next stage of Supported Independent Living.

The LIFE program is staffed 24 hours a day and is housed on the north side of Lethbridge. This program is accredited through the Canadian Accreditation Council of Human Services.

Youth accepted into the program must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 22 years;
  • Possess status with Children's Services under the Child Youth Family Enhancement Act (i.e. EA, CAG, TGO, PGO)
  • Require skill development in some or all of the following areas:

1. Life Skills

2. Personal Safety

3. Problem-solving and relationship skills

4. Resolving personal issues

5. Awareness of, and utilizing community resources and social supports

6. Integration with family and community

Referrals to the LIFE Program are made through Southwest Alberta Child and Family Services Authority Placement Committee.

The LIFE Program utilizes the following components to assess youths current abilities, as well to measure their ongoing progress in acquiring skills necessary for their transition to adulthood:

Independent Living Skills Assessment (ILS) - Created by Daniel Memorial Institute, the ILS is a computer administered tool which aids in the identification of skill deficits. Goal areas are identified from this assessment.

Hudson's Personal Adjustment Indicator Scales - This tool has the primary function of identifying areas in the youth's present life situation which may require additional support and/or counseling.

Life Space Counselling - Youth Support Counsellors provide support and assistance to youth in all areas that require skill development. The youth's service plan is regularly reviewed on an individual basis during these sessions.

Life Skills Workshops - Workshops occur every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and are mandatory for all program participants. The workshops consist of life skills training, personal safety, community resources, leisure activities, educational planning and employment skill development.

Service Planning and Progress Reviews - The youth, youth support counselor and caseworker will develop a series of goals every three months. These goals will address skill development. The youth's ability to achieve these goals is frequently reviewed during Life space counseling.
