Violence effects us all

Violence affects us all and Southern Alberta is not immune to violence. We hear daily about shootings, hate crimes, suicide, and murders and no longer are these happening only in other parts of the world, these acts of violence are across our country and even in our communities. Many people live in fear - at school, at work, walking down a darkened street or at home.
Warning: These statistics will shock you. Last year:
- 363 women and 307 children fled their homes to YWCA Harbour House
- 795 women and 932 children were TURNED AWAY because YWCA Harbour House was full
- They YWCA received 1871 Crisis Calls
- The YWCA received over 15,000 calls requesting information
- 246 people came to the YWCA for counselling
- They YWCA Outreach provided 773 services to women and 833 children

YWCA Lethbridge and District launches
" Week Without Violence 2007 "
October 14 -20, 2007
Imagine a week without violence -
now imagine a lifetime!
This is the vision of the global movement of YWCAs.
This is what YWCA Week Without Violence works to achieve.
The YWCA Week Without Violence is an annual worldwide campaign to stop violence in all its forms. Throughout the week activities focus on raising awareness, promoting attitude change and enabling individuals and organizations to begin positive actions towards ending violence in their communities.
“We encourage people and communities to identify realistic and sustainable alternatives to violence. The support and involvement of schools, politicians, law enforcement agencies, faith groups and national and local community organizations helps create safer places to live, work and play.
Violence in all its forms undermines our quality of life. Because violence reaches into our cities and towns, our schools, our homes, and our work places, it affects all of us. No matter where we live, violence and fear have become part of our everyday lives. To change this we need to take action against violence - to speak out against it and to change and influence the values and attitudes that affect violence. We can begin by imagining a life without violence- we can work to make it reality.”
Kristine Cassie, CEO - YWCA Lethbridge and District
